about

‘‘Her deep, soulful and highly flexible vocals have attracted justifiable comparisons with Cleo Lane, but Beirne is very much her own woman.’ Ian Mann/TheJazzMann
The remarkable Beverley Beirne, delivers an engaging 12-song collection of striking melodies given new voice with her third album ‘Dream Dancer’. The U.K. rising-star’s luscious alto vocals play with ease into higher vocal registers on this dynamic set that comes alive with Ella-like scat, lightning fast swing, soulful samba, a surprise Brazilian tune and exquisite ballads in this exciting, eclectic album that creates a lasting mark, with astonishing musicianship and a voice that you can’t stop listening to!
A renowned UK Jazz Singer, Beirne has headlined a variety of festivals and performed at leading clubs throughout the UK and Europe including headlining at Marsden Jazz Festival 2019, Ronnie Scotts Upstairs, Pizza Express Jazz Club, 606 Club, Cleo Lane’s prestigious venue The Stables, to name a few.

A rich, soulful alto who plays with ease into higher vocal registers, Beirne has developed her own style in the songs she interprets and her repertoire steers clear of the obvious choices. For Dream Dancer, she discovered that many of the songs were about dreaming and dancing, so that became a loose theme—including a buoyant take on Irving Berlin’s “Let‘s Face the Music and Dance,” a soulful samba read of David Bowie’s hit “Let’s Dance” (her memorial tribute recorded two weeks before he died), a swing-happy run through Cole Porter’s “Dream Dancing,” and an expansion into a more eclectic thematic zone with Hoagy Carmichael’s lonely and mysterious “Winter Moon.”

Dream Dancer, released on leading U.K. jazz label 33 Jazz Records this summer, is the follow-up to Beirne’s highly-praised sophomore recording of ‘70s and ‘80s pop hits, Jazz Just Wants to Have Fun, released in 2018 and toured in Autumn 2019. It was produced by well-respected Grammy Winning American keyboardist and producer Jason Miles who contributes both Hammond B3 and Fender Rhodes as well as arranging strings on a couple of tracks.

On Dream Dancer, Beirne launches off with the upbeat “Let‘s Face the Music and Dance” that is not only a key song in her energetic live set, but goes deeper for the singer. “I like its dichotomy,” she says. “Everything is quite upbeat, but there’s a darker element, that possibly we‘ll all be on the streets soon,’ suddenly now becoming an unlikely post-pandemic anthem! She follows with “Weaver of Dreams, swinging like a demon alongside bassist Flo Moore.

Beirne sings a luscious vocal on a jazz waltz version of the Billy Strayhorn tune “Day Dream, which is followed by a tune Bing Crosby had a 1933 hit with, “Temptation,” that opens mellow and then drives forward with different dynamics. The Gershwin under-the-radar tune “Fascinating Rhythm” is ingeniously segued with ‘Thou Swell’ and another bass opening that goes lightning fast with the leader taking speed-breaking Ella-like scats.

One of the most unusual tunes in the mix is “Bill,” a Kern & Hammerstein tune from Show Boat that is rendered as ”an ode to the ordinary guy,” with great flute and piano support. Later the magical impromptu in the studio has her “paradise prancing” through “Dream Dancing” with her vocals dynamically shifting from lower register to high tones with gospel flair and “Pieces of Dreams” (by Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman and Michel Legrand) taken as a duo masterclass gem with pianist Sam Watts.

Two of the surprises come thanks to the late Duncan Lamont, a heralded U.K. composer and tenor saxophonist who wrote all of the incidental music and the theme to the much loved ‘70s-‘90s children’s show, Mr Benn. Lamont, (88 years young at the time of recording) a one-time band member of Blossom Dearie’s band and the go-to saxophonist for Frank Sinatra when he toured the UK, stars on two of his own tracks, “Now We’re Just Friends,” a regrets break-up blues with “a crazy beautiful melody,’ and “Old Brazil,” (the Mr Benn theme tune now with lyrics that Lamont surprised Beverley with the night before recording). The track also features percussionist, the great Cyro Baptista and world leading Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo.

Dream Dancer promises to usher in new fans. “Dream Dancer is such a beautiful spin on the classics,” says producer Miles. “And Beverley has one of those voices that you can keep on listening to. I just don’t hear many jazz singers today like her.”
‘Hearing Beverley singing totally blew me away. She has such a wonderful vibe, and she feels the music right inside her!’ GRAMMY WINNING PRODUCER, Jason Miles
‘All great singers bring their own special qualities to interpreting songs and Beverley is part of that elite club…. It’s rare to come across a singer with such fine intonation. Outstanding performances.’’ SAXOPHONE LEGEND & SONGWRITER, Duncan Lamont
‘Luscious vocals! The remarkable Beverley Beirne gives striking melodies a new voice.’ DOWNBEAT & BILLBOARD CONTRIBUTER, Dan Oullette – Liner Notes
‘Beirne’s vocals often sound like the phrasing of a tenor saxophone. She knows how to hit those notes and get in between the cracks of them like a virtuoso instrumentalist.’ LA JAZZSCENE, Doc Wendell
